“I just don’t know how to pose!” If you’ve ever said this before stepping in front of a camera, you’re not alone. Most people (yes, even confident business owners and creatives) feel a little awkward when the lens turns their way. But here’s the good news: natural posing isn’t about being a model. It’s about feeling comfortable, confident, and most importantly – like yourself. As an Albuquerque portrait photographer, one of my favorite parts of the job is helping clients ease into poses that feel authentic. Whether we’re shooting in the studio, on location in Old Town, or somewhere in the Sandias, these simple tips will help you look and feel your best!
Let’s start off with your posture! Your posture sets the tone for the entire photo. Stand or sit tall, but don’t overdo it. Think open, grounded, and relaxed. Pull your shoulders back slightly, elongate your neck by bringing your chin slightly forward (not up!), and imagine a string gently lifting you from the crown of your head. Good posture creates presence. It tells the camera (and your audience) that you’re confident and comfortable in your own skin.
One of the easiest ways to avoid stiffness is to shift your weight. Standing square to the camera with feet flat can look tense or unnatural. Try placing your weight on one leg and letting the other bend slightly. This small adjustment adds flow and movement to your stance.
The same goes for sitting poses. Try leaning slightly forward from the waist, resting your arms gently, or angling your body just a bit. These micro-movements help create natural lines and energy.
The classic “What do I do with my hands?!” dilemma is real. Unplaced hands can lead to photos that look awkward or tense. Here are a few go-to tricks that work beautifully on camera:
The key? Keep it soft and intentional. As your Albuquerque portrait photographer, I’ll guide you through hand placement so it always feels natural and never forced.
Don’t force a smile! A natural expression is always more powerful than a forced one. Not every photo needs to be a big grin. Sometimes the most compelling portraits come from a soft smile, a thoughtful glance, or even a candid laugh. During our session, we’ll keep things fun and easy so you can relax. I’ll guide you with prompts and light conversation to capture those authentic, in-between moments that truly reflect your personality.
Stillness can feel stiff, especially if you’re holding a pose too long. That’s why I encourage subtle movement throughout your shoot. Walk slowly, play with your hair or clothing, look over your shoulder, or shift your gaze. These tiny actions add life and realism to your portraits.
Movement also helps release nerves. When you’re engaged in a light activity or gesture, you stop focusing on how you “should” look and start enjoying the moment. That’s when the magic happens!
You don’t need to arrive at your session with a Pinterest board of poses memorized. My job as your Albuquerque portrait photographer is to guide you every step of the way. I’ll help you feel comfortable, direct you with care, and make adjustments so everything, from your posture to your expression, looks polished but natural.
All you have to do is show up and be yourself. I’ll take care of the rest. Ready to book? Drop me a line and let’s connect!
